Brand Building

Taylor Waisanka

So you’re thinking about building a brand? Let’s talk about what makes a brand reputable.

You want your brand to pop off, which means you’ve got to think bigger than just a cool logo or a catchy slogan; it’s all about identity, your mission, and your promise to people.

Here’s how to build a brand that doesn’t just exist, but thrives.

1. Know Your Why
Your brand needs a purpose—a reason to exist beyond just making money. Take Nike, for example: They’re not just pushing sneakers; they’re all about that “Just Do It” life, inspiring people to go hard and reach their goals, no matter the excuse. That’s their why.

2. Speak Your Audience’s Language
If you don’t understand your audience, you’re toast. The best brands know exactly who they’re talking to and how to have a conversation or deliver a message. Look at Duolingo: they know their audience skews younger and values humor above all, so they know their people don’t only want to hear “hey, subscribe to our language learning app!” no—they want to hear pop cultural references and modern slanguage.

3. Build a Solid Brand Identity
Your brand identity is like your outfit, but for your business. It’s the logo, colors, fonts, and vibe you put out there. Airbnb’s brand identity is one that stands out due to their visual identity, website design, and marketing campaigns being all cohesive and instantly recognizable, reflecting their mission to make everyone feel at home, no matter where they are in the world.

4. Find Your Niche
Your brand has to have its own lane. Tesla is killing it by positioning themselves as thego-to for luxury, eco-friendly rides. They’re not just selling cars; they’re selling a future that’s stylish and sustainable. That’s how you dominate a market.

5. Stay Consistent, Always
If your brand’s not consistent, people WILL notice—and not in a good way. Starbucks nails this with their worldwide consistency… and no, we don’t mean their milk consistency. That’s another story. But whether you’re grabbing a latte in Tokyo or Johnson City, Tennessee, the experience is always on point. Additionally, they hold their brand to extremely high brand standards, using their Brand Guide as an anchor; So, weather it’s a social media post or a subway ad, you’ll know it’s Starbucks. That’s how you build trust.
